SPACIOUS is a new cloud-based platform designed to support scalable, interactive, and reproducible workflows for data-intensive astrophysical research. Built to enable advanced analysis of large and complex datasets, SPACIOUS lowers technical barriers and provides the community with cutting-edge tools and infrastructure.
SPACIOUS will officially launch its Open Call for Resources in September 2025. To prepare the community and refine science-driven use cases, we are now issuing this Initial Call for Early Test Users.
Goal of the Call
The SPACIOUS Open Call aims to engage the community through real science cases that will test the current SPACIOUS environment. Selected early users will help refine the platform and ensure it meets research needs. We are looking for projects that:
- Present a strong scientific motivation involving large and complex datasets
- Rely on data-intensive, rather than compute-intensive (traditional HPC), workflows
- Benefit from SPACIOUS scalability and modern cloud-native architectures
Participants are expected to be willing to collaborate (using a test environment, and therefore sometimes not fully stable) and suggest improvements based on early experience.
Available Resources
Selected users will:
- Access computing and storage resources.
- Work with reference datasets such as Gaia, Pan-STARRS DR1, 2MASS, ALLWISE, and more. Additional datasets may be considered upon request
- Use modern tools like Python notebooks, Spark, and Dask for scalable analysis
How to Apply to be an Early Test User
Interested teams can apply to become early test users by submitting an expression of interest in the form below including a short (preferably under one page) description of your project, its data needs, and analysis goals.
Early users will receive test accounts, and developer support within reason, to refine their approach ahead of the September call.
For questions or inquiries, please visit the SPACIOUS Contacts page.
What Comes Next
The official Open Call for Resources will be open from end September to early November 2025.
Selected projects will receive:
- Platform support and guidance
- Dedicated computing resources
Interested teams will submit a one page application detailing:
- Scientific motivation
- Data and analysis requirements
- Resource requirements
The technical feasibility and resource requirements of the proposals will be evaluated by the SPACIOUS technical team.
